Advent Day 3 - Danelaw

Good morning/afternoon/evening! Grab yourself a cup of coffee and sit down for another day of the WBB Advent!

Todays wonderful roaster, is another one so near and dear to my heart. (I love that I get to showcase all of my friends that make me incredibly proud)

If you haven't heard of Dave from Danelaw, where have you been?

Dave is a master of all trades, winning two of the UK Coffee in Good Spirits Championships, extradinaire coach and judge and all around incredible roaster, his coffees have also won over 50 great taste award stars!

Danelaw started back in 2017, with his coffee shop opening in late 2023, he has recently just taken on Bjorn beans so lookout on instagram for updates on that!

Why Danelaw?

“I’ve lived most of my life between the farming counties of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. Living in farming communities has helped me empathise with the struggles and identify with the culture of farming communities around the world. Coffee farms I have visited in Colombia and Honduras remind me of potato or sugar beet farms that I know from around my home village.

Danelaw is a hugely personal thing to me, as the area of these counties occupied by the Vikings in the 9th Century – it captures the essence of where I consider home. When people think of Danelaw, I want them to imagine something authentic and crafted with skill. Something that will sustain you, and I want people to recognise the Scandinavian influence over something local.

I have a real appreciation for authentic, local food: proper Lincolnshire sausages, Wensleydale cheese, Whitby kippers; locally-produced vegetables and meat. It’s made me understand that the food where you grow up is a massive part of who you are, and appreciating the hard work that goes into producing that food means that it deserves to be recognised as something very special

I want to be part of that local, quality food movement and take pride in where people choose to drink my coffee”

Dave also has a Decaf brand called NOTT Coffee, which has some absolutely spectacular decafs (including sleigh bells for Christmas!)

Shall we get into the coffee?

I chose another Christmassy number, I look forward to Dave's Christmas Blend every year so of course this had to make an appearance in the calendar.

Coffee: Santa Lucia

Santa Lucia is named for the Scandinavian pre-Christmas festival of light which falls on St Lucy’s Day. To celebrate, I wanted to find a coffee which reminded me of Christmas.

Origins: Colombia, Burundi, Ethiopia, Brazil

In the box you will find a coffee with flavours of dried fruit, clementine and orange peel, and a boozy, sherry trifle-like finish. Imagine warm mince pies with brandy butter and the smell of a freshly cut pine tree.

A blend of naturally processed coffees from Latin America for body, spice, dried fruit flavours and a boozy finish; and washed coffees from Africa for sweetness, orange and fruit flavours.

Let's Brew!

For all coffees when tasting I used a 18g/225g recipe, which I feel really brought out the best in so many of the coffees I picked for the calendar (if you have a physical WBB advent, you have 22.2g (of course I had to include angel numbers) to play around with)

Tastes Like:

SHES A ZESTY GAL, think orange peel, clementine, subtle lemon intertwined with dried fruits (raisins for me!) a real treat for the palette, as the coffee cools slightly, you start to get those boozy notes, subtle at first and then big bursts of boozy flavour as the cup completely cools. This definitely got me into the Christmas Spirit (like it does every year!!!)
